BARRETT: Edythe Pearl Percy

Edythe BarrettEdythe (Percy) Pearl Barrett passed away on November 24, 2015 in her ninetieth year. She and her surviving brother Dean (Elora) and sister Jeanne (Vancouver) grew up in a farm close to Thedford, Ontario.

Edythe attended Thedford Continuation School and then London Normal School to become a teacher. She taught in many one room schools until she married in 1951. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 41 years, Bert.

After marriage Edythe moved to Plattsville, where she raised her four children: her son, Kent (Lana), of Calgary, and daughters Ruth (Alliston), Janice (Seattle, WA) and Elaine (London).

Edythe eventually went back to her vocation, becoming a special education teacher. The superintendent who hired her expressed his delight that “someone of her caliber” would take this on. At the same time she nurtured her children’s post-secondary schooling aspirations. Her biggest hope for her children was that each would pursue a higher calling and choose a career not just a job.

Later Edythe became a guide at the Kitchener Pioneer Park, a daycare owner and a librarian famous for “story time” for preschoolers. She knew many but her special friends were lifelong, faithfully receiving weekly calls or cards marking special occasions, until her last few weeks. She was a gentle soul but also showed true grit when she endured cancer treatments 14 years ago.

Later she moved to Alliston to live with daughter Ruth and then into Riverwood Retirement Community Living. Even as her physical strength diminished she never stopped caring for and encouraging others.

She was also dedicated to her grandchildren Michael, William, Andrew, Jeffrey, Alison, Autumn and Thomas, reserving judgment but generous with praise.
